FAQs & Safety

Ozone Facts

  • Ozone was approved by the USDA Organic Rule in 2000 and by the FDA as an additive to kill food-borne pathogens in 2001.

  • Ozone has GRAS approval (generally recognized as safe) by the USDA and FDA for direct contact with food products.

  • Ozone is a stand-alone sanitizer which simplifies sanitation – cost effective, safe to use, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly.

  • Ozone is PH neutral and leaves no byproducts or residual contaminants behind.

  • Ozone can eliminate pathogens in seconds versus several minutes (in comparison to other oxidants).

  • Antipathogenic effects of ozone have been substantiated for several decades. Its killing action upon bacteria, viruses, fungi, and in many species of protozoa, serve as the basis for its increasing use in disinfecting municipal water supplies in cities worldwide. Read More.

  • Ozone has the ability to eliminate most known bacteria and other common organisms found in the food and beverage industry Read More

  • Ozone can be used in food processing, distribution and retail centers as a surface sanitation on food contact surfaces. Wording from The USDA National Organic Program Requirements for Food Retailers and Distribution Centers: The regulations identify some chlorine materials that may be used to sanitize food-contact surfaces, including calcium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, and sodium hypochlorite; hydrogen peroxide and ozone are also permitted. 7 C.F.R. 205.605: Read More

  • The National Organic Program (NOP) was established by the USDA to create rules and guidelines to ensure that organic labeled foods are truly organic. The NOP is responsible for administering and enforcing the regulatory framework for the national organic standards. Ozone can be used as an ingredient in organic foods. However, these foods will not be able to maintain a 100% organic rating. They will only be allowed as Organic, or Made with organic ingredients label.

  • USDA CFR 205.605. The following non-agricultural substances may be used as ingredients in or on processed products labeled as "organic" or "made with organic (specified ingredients or food group(s))" only in accordance with any restrictions specified in this section. Ozone is listed in this section Read More

Ozone Safety

  • Ozone is an unstable molecule which has a short half-life. This results in ozone changing back to oxygen quickly.

  • OSHA dictates a safe, allowable level of residual is 0.1 ppm (parts per million) for continuous exposure over an 8 hour period.

  • Our Active Ozone technicians air out your space after treatment and measure the ambient air with an OSHA approved monitor to ensure levels have dropped to at or below 0.1ppm. This is ensured prior to your safe return to your space.

  • As a reminder, no people, pets, or plants are allowed on site during treatment. However, if someone were to be exposed during treatment, temporary, short term effects from ozone could include headache, sore throat, or eye irritation.

Mg(OH)2 NP (Magnesium Hydroxide Nano-platelet) Facts

  • Our NanoGuard FS is comprised of Mg(OH)2 NP (Magnesium Hydroxide Nano-platelets) which creates a long-lasting, protective barrier.

  • Magnesium Hydroxide is GRAS (generally recognized as safe) as a food ingredient and FDA approved for use in food products (U.S. Food & Drug Administration CFR - Code of Federal Regulations Title 21, Volume 3) Read More

  • Magnesium Hydroxide is certified USDA for use as organic (USDA 205.603) Read More & here.

  • Active Ozone utilizes food-grade magnesium hydroxide which is amongst the purest magnesium found on earth. Mg(OH)2 applications could also include: antacids, food shelf-life extender, dietary supplements, and food service.

  • Magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles (Mg(OH2) NPS) have a wide variety of applications as an environmentally friendly antimicrobial nanomaterial, with potentially low toxicity Read More

  • Antimicrobial properties of NP technology have been tested and proven to be effective for use in medical facilities for control of human pathogens including against multiple drug resistance organisms. NP technologies have also been used to effectively mitigate infections from wounds, burns, and to sanitize medical transports, rooms, equipment, instructions, attire, and entire hospital facilities Read More

  • Nano-platelets eliminate pathogenic microbes by several mechanisms, therefore resistance is less likely to develop Read More

  • Nano-platelets are long-lasting in nature

Mg(OH)2 NP (Magnesium Hydroxide Nano-platelet) Safety

  • Cytotoxity tests of human cell lines demonstrated safety of Mg(OH)2 NPs. Mg(OH)2 is currently used in formulations of numerous consumer products (ex: paper, cosmetics, and ‘milk of magnesia’). Their presence in consumer products for decades without harmful effects has been widely documented. Read More

Our Treatment System and COVID-19:

  • While ozone is highly effective for the inactivation of many viruses, we are not aware of any research and testing that has been conducted specifically on the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) coronavirus.

  • To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no examples in the public domain of ozone sterilization being used to kill the current strain of Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus which causes COVID-19 disease). There has simply not been enough time to validate any study, therefore definitive conclusions cannot be made regarding ozone inactivation of SARS-CoV-2. Saying that, there is reason to believe it would be effective:

  • During SARS epidemic of 2003, ozone sterilization was successfully used to purify environments infected with Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, the virus which causes the SARS disease. As SARS-Cov-1 is also a member of the coronavirus family, it is likely that ozone sterilization would be effective at eliminating SARS-CoV-2, the Coronavirus which causes the COVID-19 disease Source

  • Coronavirus are “enveloped viruses.” Ozone eliminates this type of virus by breaking through the outer shell into the core, resulting in damage to the viral RNA. Ozone can also damage the outer shell of the virus through oxidation. If Coronaviruses are exposed to a sufficient dose of ozone, this can result in them being 99% damaged Source

General information on ozone vs. viruses:

  • Ozone has a 99% effectiveness when eliminating pathogens like the flu, SARS, and the coronavirus. Read More

  • Previous studies show that 99% of viruses have been damaged or destroyed after just 30 seconds of exposure to ozone. Ozone destroys viruses by diffusing through the protein coat into the nucleic acid core, resulting in damage to the viral RNA. At higher concentrations, ozone destroys the exterior protein shell by oxidation (sources: National Ozone Association Read More & SARS: CLEARING THE AIR Jerome J. Schentag, Pharm.
